Anthony Albanese is under fire over a grants program that benefited his local golf club, raising questions about whether any rules were broken. The controversy centers on the $560 million Major and Local Community Infrastructure program, which allocated millions to marginal Labor seats and an old golf club tied to the Prime Minister. While the government insists it followed the standard method and delivered election promises, transparency advocates have drawn comparisons to the notorious "sports rorts" affair.
How Did the Grants Program Operate?
Ahead of the 2025 election, Labor promised to fund more than 200 projects in different electorates if re-elected. After winning, the government established the Major and Local Community Infrastructure program, which opened for applications in September 2025 and closed on 1 March 2026. The program was, by design, only accessible to groups singled out by the government.

Applicants had to demonstrate their project's viability, social benefit, value for money, and ability to deliver. The program received 229 applications. Government data shows 92 of those, worth $246 million, have already been approved. Guardian Australia confirmed that no applications have been rejected, though three were withdrawn by applicants. The infrastructure department ran the program, and its minister, Catherine King, signed off on each grant.
Albanese's Golf Club and Marginal Seats
The controversy deepened when it emerged that Albanese's former local golf club was among the beneficiaries. The club, located in his electorate, received funding for infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, a significant portion of grants flowed to marginal Labor seats, prompting accusations of pork-barrelling.
Critics argue that the invite-only nature of the program and the lack of rejections indicate a pre-determined allocation process. Transparency advocates say the system needs reform to ensure fair and merit-based distribution of public funds.
Were Any Rules Broken?
The government claims it has broken no rules. Minister King has stated that a different minister signed off on grants related to Albanese's golf club to avoid a conflict of interest. However, the opposition and independent watchdogs question whether the program's design itself violated guidelines for competitive grant processes.
Comparisons to the "sports rorts" affair—where the previous government was accused of misusing sports grants for political purposes—are inevitable. The key difference may lie in the explicit invite-only structure, which some argue makes the political targeting more transparent, albeit still controversial.
