Australia's Indigenous population before colonisation was likely 2.2 million, according to groundbreaking new research that dramatically revises previous estimates and sheds light on the demographic catastrophe that followed European arrival.

The study, conducted by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF) and published in Nature Human Behaviour, suggests that early estimates of 250,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were vastly underestimated. The authors argue that this correction is invaluable to truth-telling and reconciliation.

New Research Reveals True Scale of Pre-Colonial Population

The modelling by CIEHF indicates that there were 2.2 million Indigenous people living in Australia before the First Fleet arrived in 1788. This figure is nearly nine times higher than the commonly cited 250,000. The research highlights that historical population estimates have been poor due to lethal diseases, frontier and structural violence, and the absence of systematic censuses.

Co-author Prof Corey Bradshaw, a global ecology professor at Flinders University, explains that the modelling shows there had to be millions of excess deaths from smallpox and other diseases, massacres, and the other results of colonisation such as dispossession and malnutrition. His previous research found that an 1789 smallpox outbreak alone killed as many as 220,000 Aboriginal people. There were also other smallpox epidemics, as well as outbreaks of measles, influenza, tuberculosis, and other diseases.

Impact of Colonisation: A Demographic Catastrophe

The term "demographic catastrophe" aptly describes the devastating impact of colonisation on Australia's Indigenous population. The arrival of Europeans brought not only violence and dispossession but also a wave of diseases to which the Indigenous population had no immunity. The result was a collapse of population on a scale that has been historically understated.

The authors of the study warn that the content is confronting and possibly distressing, as it details the immense loss of life. This research underscores the importance of acknowledging the true scale of this tragedy as part of the reconciliation process.

Why Previous Estimates Were So Low

Early estimates of Indigenous population were based on incomplete observations and often biased accounts. The lack of systematic censuses before colonisation meant that numbers were often guessed or based on limited contact. Additionally, the rapid decline of the population due to disease and violence meant that later counts were already drastically reduced.

The new modelling uses advanced statistical methods to estimate population levels based on available data, including historical records, archaeological evidence, and ecological carrying capacity. It provides a more accurate picture of the population before the catastrophic events of colonisation.

Key Takeaways

  • The pre-colonial Indigenous population of Australia was likely 2.2 million, far exceeding previous estimates.
  • Colonisation led to millions of excess deaths from disease, violence, and dispossession.
  • Accurate population estimates are crucial for truth-telling and reconciliation.
  • The research highlights the scale of the demographic catastrophe that followed 1788.

FAQ

What was the Indigenous population of Australia before colonisation?

New research suggests the Indigenous population was approximately 2.2 million before the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, significantly higher than earlier estimates of 250,000.

How did colonisation affect the Indigenous population?

Colonisation caused a demographic catastrophe, with millions of excess deaths due to diseases like smallpox, measles, and influenza, as well as frontier violence, massacres, dispossession, and malnutrition.

Why were previous population estimates so low?

Previous estimates were based on incomplete observations and lacked systematic censuses. The rapid decline of the population due to disease and violence meant that later counts were already drastically reduced.
