Barnaby Joyce has claimed that Australia is a Christian nation, stating that many First Nations people would agree with him. The New England MP made the remarks at an anti-abortion gala in Sydney, where he accepted a prize for "political courage."
Joyce's Comments at the Anti-Abortion Gala
In an exchange posted on social media, Benjamin van der Linden from the group Make Australia Christian Again asked Joyce if Australia was a Christian nation. Joyce responded, "Yes, it was premised on Christian principles. A lot of Indigenous people would tell you straight up and proper Australia's a Christian nation."

The comments come amid declining adherence to Christian denominations in Australia, while One Nation leader Pauline Hanson insists Australians live in a "predominantly a Judeo-Christian society."
Political Reactions and Context
The gala organizer and controversial anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe praised Joyce and the One Nation party for their stance. Howe has previously supported Hanson's call for a "monoculture," stating it would include immigrants who assimilate and contribute to Australia.
At the same event, Howe's husband, James Howe, made inflammatory remarks about Islam, calling it a "primitive, barbaric religion." These statements have sparked widespread debate about Australia's religious identity and multiculturalism.
Data on Religious Affiliation in Australia
| Religion | Percentage of Population (2021 Census) |
|---|---|
| Christianity | 43.9% |
| No Religion | 38.9% |
| Islam | 3.2% |
| Other Religions | 14.0% |
While Christianity remains the largest religious group, its share has declined significantly from over 60% in 2011. The rise of "no religion" reflects a broader secular trend in Australian society.
