Gender Mentions Scrubbed from Queensland Office for Women Website 2026

The recent removal of gender equality references from the Queensland Office for Women's website has sparked controversy, highlighting a broader political debate over terminology and public policy. This change, reported by Guardian Australia, reflects alleged efforts by the Liberal National party government to 'dewokify' the public service, raising questions about the future of gender-focused initiatives.

What Happened: Gender References Removed

According to internal emails and web archives, the Office for Women's website underwent a significant overhaul in January, with staff instructed to scan for the word 'gender' and 'reframe' its usage. As a result, six prominent mentions of 'gender equality' or 'gender equal' were removed from the 'About' page, including the mission statement that previously read: 'We're working towards a gender equal Queensland.' The phrase also disappeared from the toolbar and the first dot point describing the office's role.

Comparisons of archived and live pages show more than 20 mentions of 'gender' were removed across the site, including references to the gender pay gap. However, some mentions remain, such as on the homepage, indicating a selective scrubbing rather than a complete purge.

Allegations and Official Response

Former department staffers claim they were told that the Minister for Women, Fiona Simpson, deemed the word 'gender' to be 'on the nose' and 'loaded.' They allege managers relayed that the term should be obscured because it 'made the LNP think of the LGBTIQ' community. In response, Simpson called these claims 'utterly false,' stating that the website update was part of launching Queensland's first Women's Economic Security Strategy, designed by and for Queensland women.

The controversy underscores the tension between political ideologies and public service language. While the government frames the change as a focus on economic security, critics argue it erases the systemic nature of gender inequality.

Impact on Gender Equality Initiatives

The removal of 'gender' from official communications could have practical implications. Language shapes policy priorities and public perception. By omitting 'gender,' the government may inadvertently downplay the specific challenges women face, such as the pay gap and workplace discrimination. However, supporters of the change argue that focusing on 'women' rather than 'gender' makes the message more direct and less ideological.

To understand the scale, consider this comparison:

Key Takeaways

• The Queensland Office for Women removed over 20 mentions of 'gender' from its website.
• Allegations suggest political motivation to 'dewokify' the public service, though officials deny this.
• The change may affect how gender equality is addressed in policy and public discourse.
• Some references remain, indicating an inconsistent approach.
• The debate highlights the power of language in shaping social policy.

What This Means for Women's Advocacy

Advocacy groups have expressed concern that the removal of 'gender' weakens the government's commitment to addressing systemic inequality. Without explicit language, policies may become gender-blind, failing to account for unique barriers women face. On the other hand, some argue that using 'women' instead of 'gender' makes the target audience clearer, potentially improving the effectiveness of programs.

As the situation develops, it's crucial to monitor how these language changes translate into actual policy outcomes. The Women's Economic Security Strategy will be a test case for whether the government's approach yields tangible benefits for Queensland women.
