The methanol poisoning of two Australian teenagers in Laos has left families devastated by what they call unacceptable charges, as authorities prepare to lay lesser offences that carry a maximum of one year in jail and a A$1,600 fine. Bianca Jones and Holly Morton-Bowles, both 19, died after consuming tainted vodka at Nana backpackers hostel in Vang Vieng in late 2024, along with three other foreign nationals.
What Happened in the Laos Methanol Poisoning Case?
The tragedy unfolded when the young travellers drank alcohol suspected to be contaminated with methanol, a toxic substance often used in counterfeit spirits. Methanol can cause blindness, organ failure, and death even in small amounts. The incident has sparked international outrage, especially as the expected charges are seen as too lenient.

Expected Charges and Family Reactions
Officials in Laos are expected to file charges against those who allegedly produced the tainted vodka, but the penalties are limited to one year in prison and a fine of about A$1,600. Holly’s father, Shaun Bowles, called the news “devastating,” while Bianca’s father, Mark Jones, said the outcome is “unacceptable” given the loss of life. Bianca’s mother, Michelle Jones, warned travellers: “Don’t go to Laos.”

Key Takeaways for Travellers
- Never drink homemade or unlabeled spirits in countries with weak alcohol regulations.
- Stick to sealed, branded bottles from reputable bars or stores.

Government Response and Frustration
Australia’s foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, expressed deep frustration and bitter disappointment over the expected charges. FAQ
What is methanol poisoning?
Methanol poisoning occurs when toxic methanol is ingested, often through counterfeit alcohol. It can cause blindness, organ damage, and death if untreated. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, and nausea.
How can travellers avoid methanol poisoning?
Travelers should only consume alcohol from sealed, reputable sources. Avoid homemade spirits, unlabeled bottles, and free drinks in bars. Stick to bottled beer, wine, or spirits from known brands.
Why are the charges in Laos considered lenient?
The maximum penalty for the expected charges is one year in jail and a small fine, which families and governments view as disproportionate to the loss of multiple lives. This has led to calls for legal reforms in Laos.
What should I do if I suspect methanol poisoning?
Seek immediate medical attention. Antidotes such as fomepizole or ethanol can be effective if administered early. Do not induce vomiting unless advised by a doctor.
