The assistant minister for multicultural affairs has condemned a new anti-immigration video released by former prime minister Tony Abbott, sparking a fierce debate over multiculturalism in Australia. In the video, Abbott declares that 'multiculturalism in Australia has failed' and targets Muslim communities, arguing that 'diversity is not our strength.' The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from political leaders and civil society groups.
Political Reactions to the Anti-Immigration Video
Speaking to ABC’s Afternoon Briefing, Assistant Minister Julian Hill described the video as 'appalling' and a direct attack on Australia's inclusive values. Hill emphasized that multiculturalism is a cornerstone of Australian identity, contributing to economic growth and social cohesion. The controversy comes amid broader debates over immigration policy and national unity.

- Former deputy prime minister John Anderson shared the video on X, amplifying its reach.
- More than 40 civil society groups are urging universities to protect peaceful protest and academic freedom.
Impact on Australian Politics and Society
The video has reignited discussions about immigration and integration. While some conservative voices support Abbott's stance, many Australians view multiculturalism as a success story. A recent comparison of immigration policies shows stark differences:
| Policy Aspect | Pro-Multiculturalism | Anti-Immigration Stance |
|---|---|---|
| Economic Contribution | Immigrants boost GDP and fill skill gaps | Claimed to strain public services |
| Social Cohesion | Diversity strengthens communities | Argued to create division |
| National Identity | Inclusive and evolving | Static and exclusionary |
This table highlights the fundamental divide in Australian politics. The assistant minister’s condemnation reflects the government’s commitment to an inclusive society, while Abbott’s video appeals to a more nationalist audience.
