Prisoner Early Release Controversy: Politicians Joke About Scheme 2026

The prisoner early release scheme has sparked controversy after ministers Wes Streeting and Shabana Mahmood were caught on a hot mic making jokes about releasing inmates. The video, published by Guido Fawkes, shows the two politicians ribbing the new justice secretary, Alex Norris, with Streeting saying “He wants to let them all out.” Both later apologized, calling it a moment of levity, but victims’ groups have reacted angrily.

What Is the Prisoner Early Release Scheme?

The government’s early release program aims to alleviate overcrowding in UK prisons by letting certain inmates out before their full sentences are served. Critics argue it puts public safety at risk, especially for victims of domestic abuse and violent crime.

Political Reactions and Backlash

Streeting and Mahmood’s comments were immediately condemned. The victims’ commissioner and domestic abuse commissioner issued a rare joint statement warning that the scheme could endanger abuse survivors. The exchange also drew comparisons to a 2017 joke by then-PM Theresa May about former justice secretary Ken Clarke.
