Toddler Rattlesnake Bite Under Amazon Package: Safety Tips 2026

A toddler rattlesnake bite under an Amazon package in California recently made headlines, underscoring the importance of snake safety for families. This incident occurred when three-year-old Addy ran to grab a delivery with her mother and was bitten by a Southern Pacific rattlesnake hiding beneath the envelope. Prompt anti-venom treatment saved her, but the event serves as a critical reminder for parents about hidden dangers at home.

Rattlesnake Bite Risks and Recent Trends

Rattlesnake bites have become more common in California this year due to heatwaves since March, which increase snake activity. According to the Los Angeles Times, the California poison control system received reports of 277 bites so far this year—almost as many as normally reported in an entire year. Three fatalities have occurred, about two more than usual. While rattlesnakes typically avoid humans, they will bite when threatened, cornered, or surprised—as in Addy's case.

Recognizing a Rattlesnake Bite Emergency

If a child is bitten, immediate medical attention is vital. Symptoms may include swelling, pain, bruising, nausea, or difficulty breathing. Never cut the wound or attempt to suck out venom. Keep the child calm and still, and call emergency services or head to the nearest pediatric ICU, which specializes in treating children with envenomation.

How to Prevent Snake Encounters Around the Home

Snakes often hide under objects like packages, rocks, or wood piles. Parents can reduce risk by:

• Instructing children to never reach under or behind objects without adult supervision.
• Keeping yards tidy—mow grass, remove debris, and seal gaps in fences.
• Using gloves and a tool to move packages, especially during warm months.
• Familiarizing yourself with local venomous snakes and teaching kids to spot them.

What to Do If a Snake Bites Your Child

Time is critical. Call 911 immediately. If possible, safely take a photo of the snake for identification—but do not risk another bite. Remove jewelry or tight clothing near the bite area. Keep the bite below heart level if possible, and do not apply ice or tourniquets. At the hospital, anti-venom is the primary treatment, often requiring multiple doses in a pediatric ICU.
