Andy Burnham is little known in Brussels, but that will soon change as the UK's new prime minister prepares for an EU-UK summit this autumn. EU leaders have welcomed him, with Ursula von der Leyen emphasizing strengthened partnerships for security and prosperity.
What the EU Wants from Andy Burnham
The European Commission and member states hope for a clear trajectory on defense, energy, and economic cooperation. Former Brexit taskforce adviser Georg Riekeles notes that Burnham starts with a blank sheet, which can be an advantage. However, the main concern is whether he will align with the EU's positive agenda on these issues.

Defense and Security Cooperation
EU diplomats see defense as a key area where the UK can re-engage. The German chancellor Friedrich Merz invited Burnham to Berlin, highlighting deep connections in these times of geopolitical tension. Joint security initiatives are expected to be a top priority.
Energy and Economic Ties
Energy cooperation is another pillar. The EU wants joint efforts on renewable energy and supply chain resilience. On economic issues, both sides seek to reduce trade barriers while respecting Brexit red lines. A diplomat observed that being little known is not necessarily bad; it allows Burnham to define his own approach.
Burnham's Brexit Stance
Burnham's most notable statement was his wish to see Britain rejoin the EU in his lifetime, but he has downplayed this during campaigning in leave-voting areas. He argues that constant Brexit arguments would leave Britain in a permanent rut. Michael Jacobs, a former adviser to Gordon Brown, called Burnham's rejoining comment heartfelt but politically astute.
