Burnham to Launch AI Unit for Wildfire Detection After Record Summer 2026

The UK government is set to create an AI Cobra unit to spot wildfires faster, following a record-breaking summer that saw devastating blazes across the country. Andy Burnham will announce the plans at the government's first wildfire resilience summit on Friday.

The new unit will be based in the National Situation Centre, part of the Cobra briefing rooms. It aims to use artificial intelligence to detect and respond to wildfires more quickly, potentially saving lives and property.

Why the UK Needs an AI Wildfire Unit

This year, the UK experienced its hottest-ever summer, with prolonged dry periods and extreme heat fueling wildfires that triggered emergency alerts to mobile phones in England and Wales. Figures released on 8 October showed a clear upward trend in the number of fires recorded each year.

The Met Office found that the climate crisis made this extreme heat about 130 times more likely. As wildfires become more frequent and intense, traditional firefighting methods may struggle to keep up. The new AI unit is designed to give authorities an edge.

How the AI Unit Will Work

The government said its new AI unit would enable it to “spot and fight fires faster.” While specific details of the technology are yet to be revealed, the unit is expected to leverage satellite monitoring and early warning systems.

Businesses including Google, Airbus, and VodafoneThree are expected to attend the summit to set out how their technologies can help. Satellite monitoring can detect heat signatures and smoke plumes, while AI algorithms can analyze data to predict fire spread and prioritize response efforts.

Key Technologies in Wildfire Detection

• Satellite monitoring: Detects heat anomalies and smoke from space, providing early warnings.
• AI algorithms: Analyze data to predict fire behavior and optimize resource allocation.
• Early warning systems: Alert authorities and the public to imminent danger.
• Drone technology: Provides real-time aerial views of fire fronts.
• Data integration: Combines weather, terrain, and vegetation data for better risk assessment.

Funding for Fire Crews and PPE

The prime minister will also announce £45m for fire crews to buy wildfire-specific personal protective equipment (PPE). This comes after the Guardian revealed that more than half of the 29 fire services that responded to requests for information had no wildfire PPE.

They included the Suffolk fire and rescue service, which had to deal with an “apocalyptic” wildfire earlier this summer. The funding aims to ensure firefighters have the right gear to tackle wildfires safely and effectively.

Comparing Wildfire Preparedness

The table below compares key aspects of wildfire preparedness before and after the new measures.

What This Means for Businesses and Residents

The involvement of major tech companies signals a growing market for wildfire detection and response technologies. Businesses in AI, satellite imaging, and telecommunications may find new opportunities in government contracts and partnerships.

For residents in fire-prone areas, the new AI unit and improved PPE could lead to faster response times and better protection. However, experts caution that technology alone cannot solve the problem; prevention and climate action remain critical. As the UK grapples with the increasing threat of wildfires, the success of this initiative will depend on effective collaboration between government, industry, and local communities. For those following the intersection of AI and public safety, this development highlights how artificial intelligence is being deployed to address climate-related challenges. It also underscores the need for robust infrastructure and skilled personnel to manage these systems. Context on how this played out before sits in Business: latest articles.
