Chelsea Pre-Season Draw Raises Questions for Xabi Alonso 2026

Chelsea's pre-season draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim has given Xabi Alonso food for thought as the new manager faces a bloated squad and ticking clock before the Premier League opener. The 2-2 friendly in Malaysia highlighted both attacking depth and defensive inexperience, leaving fans and pundits questioning the team's readiness for Fulham on August 24.

Seesaw Draw Exposes Chelsea's Pre-Season Issues

The match against the Malaysian champions was anything but dull. Chelsea rotated heavily, with 11 changes from the previous win over Milan, giving teenagers a chance in defense and midfield. However, the front three of Estêvão Willian, Liam Delap, and Nicolas Jackson—costing over £100m combined—showed flashes but lacked cohesion.

Delap scored twice from the penalty spot, matching his entire league tally from last season in just 20 minutes. Yet his future remains uncertain as Alonso has a wealth of striking options, including João Pedro, Danny Welbeck, and Emmanuel Emegha. The return of Mykhailo Mudryk from a drugs ban adds further competition on the wings.

Key Takeaways from the Johor Darul Ta'zim Friendly

• Defensive inexperience: Teenagers in the backline struggled against JDT's pace, conceding two goals.
• Striker surplus: With Delap, Jackson, Pedro, Welbeck, and Emegha, Alonso must decide who leads the line.
• Mudryk's early return: The winger's availability boosts options but complicates squad balance.
• Time pressure: Less than two weeks to integrate key players before facing Fulham.

Comparing Chelsea's Striker Options

As the table shows, Alonso has a mix of youth and experience. Delap's penalty prowess is clear, but Pedro's all-round game might suit Chelsea's possession style better. Welbeck offers leadership, while Jackson's loan spell at Bayern proved his quality at the top level.

What Does This Mean for the Fulham Clash?

Alonso's old friend Álvaro Arbeloa manages Fulham, adding a personal edge to the opener. The draw against JDT suggests Chelsea are a work in progress. The midfield lacked creativity, and the defense looked vulnerable to quick counter-attacks. Against a well-organized Fulham side, these issues could be punished.

However, Chelsea's attacking depth is undeniable. If Alonso can find the right balance—perhaps pairing Delap with Pedro and using Mudryk and Palmer on the wings—they could outscore most opponents. The key is defensive stability, which requires time Alonso doesn't have.

FAQ

In conclusion, the pre-season draw has given Alonso plenty to ponder. With a bloated squad and limited time, he must make tough decisions to ensure Chelsea starts the season strongly. Fans will hope the attacking talent outweighs defensive frailties when they face Fulham.
