Chinese tech and Russian tactics are increasingly aiding Iran's bombing of US bases, as revealed by recent attacks in the Middle East. The crisis escalated when three US soldiers were killed in a strike on the Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Jordan, protected by a Thaad air defense system. Satellite imagery later released by Iranian media showed significant destruction, raising questions about the defense system's failure. This incident underscores a transformation in Iran's missile capabilities, driven by external technological and tactical support.
The Role of Chinese Satellite Imagery
China's commercial satellite companies have been providing high-resolution imagery to Iran, enabling precise targeting of US assets. In May 2023, the US sanctioned three Chinese firms, including Mizar Vision, for supplying images that exposed the location of US military aircraft, Patriot systems, and Thaad batteries at bases in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Jordan. This intelligence allows Iran to identify static targets and plan coordinated strikes. While some experts argue commercial imagery suffices for static targets, the systematic provision of such data marks a new level of collaboration.

Russian Tactics: Lessons from Ukraine
Iran has also adopted electronic warfare and missile salvo tactics learned from Russia's war in Ukraine. These include using multiple missiles to saturate air defenses and deploying decoys to confuse radar systems. According to Andreas Krieg of King's College London, this combination of better intelligence, missile navigation, and coordinated attack planning represents a real transformation in Iran's operational effectiveness. The result is a higher lethality against fortified US positions, even when defended by advanced systems.
Comparison of Iranian Missile Capabilities: Then vs. Now
| Aspect | Before Chinese/Russian Assistance | After Chinese/Russian Assistance |
|---|---|---|
| Targeting Accuracy | Low - relied on inaccurate ballistic missiles | High - guided by satellite reconnaissance and navigation |
| Air Defense Penetration | Poor - easily intercepted by Patriot/Thaad | Improved - salvo tactics and decoys overwhelm defenses |
| Intelligence Gathering | Limited human intelligence | Real-time satellite imagery from Chinese firms |
| Overall Effectiveness | Limited damage to hardened bases | Several buildings destroyed, casualties inflicted |
Key Takeaways
- Chinese satellite companies provide high-resolution images that help Iran target US bases and air defense systems.
- Russian combat tactics from the Ukraine war enhance Iran's missile salvo strategies, making strikes more effective.
- The Muwaffaq Salti airbase attack shows that even Thaad defenses can be neutralized with coordinated planning.
- US intelligence estimates Iran's ballistic missile program remains 70% intact despite previous claims of destruction.
- Geopolitical implications are severe, potentially drawing the US into a broader conflict with Iran-backed forces.
