Diane Abbott and Joani Reid have been readmitted as Labour MPs with the whip restored, marking a significant political development under Andy Burnham’s premiership. The Labour party confirmed the decisions followed independent disciplinary processes, with no leadership interference.
Background of the Suspensions
Diane Abbott, the 72-year-old Mother of the House, was suspended for a second time last summer over comments about racism that echoed her 2023 suspension. Joani Reid, elected in 2024 for East Kilbride and Strathaven, voluntarily gave up the whip in March after her husband was arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service in a China-linked case.

Independent Disciplinary Process
Labour sources stress that Reid was never accused of wrongdoing and was not part of any police investigations into alleged Chinese spying. Abbott has since apologised after the investigation concluded, receiving a formal warning. The party’s independent review board approved both processes under Labour rulebook.
Key Details of the Readmission
A Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour party expects the highest standards from our elected representatives and party members. The party assesses any alleged breaches of such standards independently of the leadership and political interference.” The whip restoration allows both MPs to fully participate in parliamentary duties.
| MP | Constituency | Reason for Suspension | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diane Abbott | Hackney North and Stoke Newington | Comments on racism (2023, 2024) | Readmitted with formal warning |
| Joani Reid | East Kilbride and Strathaven | Husband’s arrest (voluntary relinquishment) | Readmitted, no wrongdoing found |
Political Implications
This move signals a commitment to due process and internal accountability within Labour. It also removes a distraction for Burnham’s early premiership, allowing focus on policy agenda. The readmissions may appease party members concerned about fairness and transparency.
Reactions and Next Steps
No official comment from Abbott or Reid yet, but sources indicate readiness to resume work. The party’s independent review board’s approval adds legitimacy. Observers note this could set a precedent for handling future disciplinary cases.
