Hong Kong authorities have arrested five people in a series of bookstore raids targeting allegedly seditious publications, marking the latest enforcement of the 2024 national security law. The crackdown on independent bookstores raises serious questions about freedom of expression in the Asian financial hub.
Details of the Hong Kong Bookstore Raids
On Wednesday, police officers raided two bookstores in the Mong Kok district: Have A Nice Stay, founded by former journalists, and Greenfield Book Store. Videos showed officers seizing boxes and leading a woman in handcuffs to a van. Police confirmed the arrest of two men and three women on suspicion of displaying and offering items with seditious intention.

This is the third round of arrests linked to independent bookstores since March and June, widely seen as part of a broader effort to stifle dissent. Hong Kong, once celebrated for its publication freedoms, now faces increased scrutiny over its legal environment.
What the National Security Law Means for Booksellers
Hong Kong’s security chief, Chris Tang, stated: “If you are a bookseller, you have a responsibility to ensure that the books you sell do not endanger national security.” He compared it to food vendors ensuring their goods are not poisonous. This legal framework places a heavy burden on retailers to self-censor or risk prosecution.
| Aspect | Before 2024 Law | After 2024 Law |
|---|---|---|
| Freedom of publication | High, with minimal restrictions | Strict, with sedition penalties |
| Police raids on bookstores | Rare | Increasingly common |
| Cross-border book trade | Allowed | Restricted |

Impact on Businesses and Consumers
For business owners, the raids signal a need to review inventory for compliance.
