ICE Ankle Monitor for Work Permit Holder: Is This America 2026

An ICE ankle monitor on a work permit holder with a thriving coffee shop raises a troubling question: is this America? Assim Alkhawaja's story highlights the harsh reality of immigration enforcement for even the most productive members of society.

Alkhawaja, a 53-year-old originally from Saudi Arabia, holds a valid work permit, has a pending asylum case, and owns a popular local coffee business. Yet in February, ICE agents arrested him while he was dropping off Lyft passengers at Camp Pendleton. He spent eight days in detention and now wears a bulky GPS tracker on his ankle, reporting weekly to ICE check-ins.

The Shocking Treatment of a Law-Abiding Immigrant

Despite having no criminal convictions and a doctorate from the University of San Francisco, Alkhawaja was placed in removal proceedings. His experience reflects a growing pattern where ICE prioritizes enforcement over fairness, even for those who contribute significantly to the economy.

During his weekly check-ins, he faces the same questions: where do you live? Do you work? Occasionally, why are you applying for asylum? The fear of being detained and deported on the spot is ever-present.

What an ICE Ankle Monitor Means for Work Permit Holders

An ICE ankle monitor is not just a tracking device; it's a psychological burden. It restricts movement, creates stigma, and constantly reminds the wearer of their precarious status. For work permit holders like Alkhawaja, it can jeopardize business operations and personal relationships.

His coffee shop, which was growing steadily, now faces uncertainty as he navigates the legal system. The monitor also affects his ability to travel and interact with customers, adding stress to an already difficult situation.
