Israel is threatening to seize ancient water reservoirs near Bethlehem, escalating a decades-long struggle for control over West Bank land and historical narratives. The Solomon's Pools, dating back to the second century BCE, have become a flashpoint in the region's ongoing conflict.
Historical Significance of Solomon's Pools
The pools, located just south of Bethlehem, were originally constructed by the Romans as part of an extensive engineering project to supply water to Jerusalem. Over centuries, they were expanded under Ottoman rule and modernized during the British Mandate. Today, they serve as a vital recreational space for local Palestinians, offering a rare green sanctuary amid encroaching settlements.

Current Threats and Escalation
In May, Israel's extremist finance minister Bezalel Smotrich explicitly threatened to “erase” agreements confirming Palestinian ownership of the site. Since then, Israeli settlers and troops have increased their presence around the pools. Local activist Mahmoud Jaber from Artas expressed dismay: “It’s the only place now in all Bethlehem that you can find somewhere to sit and to enjoy the water, the shade, the green space – and now they are trying to steal it.”
