John Tilbury's At Home album review reveals a monumental four-disc collection that captures the essence of contemporary, improvised, and experimental music. This treasure trove, released by Another Timbre, documents the final years of Tilbury's extraordinary career, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the mind of a pianist who redefined the boundaries of sound.
John Tilbury: A Pioneer of Avant-Garde Piano
Few artists have shaped the landscape of experimental music as profoundly as John Tilbury. At 82, he decided to end his live performances, but Simon Reynell, founder of Another Timbre, persuaded him to record informal sessions at his home in Deal, Kent. Over eight years, these recordings evolved into At Home, a four-disc set that celebrates Tilbury's unique artistry and his enduring influence on contemporary composition.

Tilbury's association with Morton Feldman is legendary. He became the composer's leading interpreter, and his rendition of Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety is a masterclass in spontaneous phrasing and sonic sensitivity. Feldman's restraint permeates the entire collection, creating a cohesive yet diverse listening experience.
Highlights from the At Home Collection
The album is a rich tapestry of works by friends and collaborators from Tilbury's time with Cornelius Cardew's revolutionary Scratch Orchestra. Among the standout pieces are John Lely's hypnotic Sycamore, five pensive nocturnes by Mark R Taylor, and Dave Smith's Al Contrario, a brooding contrapuntal fantasy that honors French composer Charles-Valentin Alkan.
One of the most beautiful moments is For Samuel Beckett, an improvisation with pianist Sebastian Lexer from a 2005 concert. This archival recording showcases Tilbury's ability to create pure, emotional music in the moment. The collection also includes quirky gems like Guillaume de Machaut arranged by Kurtág and an extraordinary recording of Swiss dust particles combined with an inside-piano improvisation.
The Clavichord and Nature's Whims
Several pieces were written for Tilbury's sea-air-weathered clavichord, whose tuning is left to the whims of nature. Christopher Hobbs' Five Pieces sounds like a baroque suite written for the Mad Hatter's tea party, with its deliriously plinkety-plonk tones. This unique instrument adds a layer of unpredictability and charm to the album.
