Manchester United midfield rebuild has finally taken center stage, and Michael Carrick now has no excuses as the club invests heavily in proven talent. After decades of underwhelming signings, the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and the imminent capture of Carlos Baleba signal a decisive shift in strategy. This article examines the historical failures, the new recruits, and what it means for the club's future.
The History of Midfield Failures
Since Carrick's own arrival in 2006, United's midfield recruitment has been a catalogue of missed opportunities. From Bastian Schweinsteiger's ill-fated move to Paul Pogba's inconsistent brilliance, the club has repeatedly failed to secure players who could dominate consistently.

From Schweinsteiger to Casemiro
Schweinsteiger, once a World Cup winner, managed just 35 appearances and two goals before being exiled by José Mourinho. Casemiro, signed at 30, delivered only two standout seasons out of four. The pattern is clear: United either bought past their peak or failed to unlock their potential.
| Player | Year | Fee | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bastian Schweinsteiger | 2015 | £15m | Poor |
| Paul Pogba | 2016 | £93.2m | Inconsistent |
| Casemiro | 2022 | £70m | Mixed |
| Youri Tielemans | 2025 | £35m | Promising |
| Andrey Santos | 2025 | £48m | High Potential |
New Signings Bring Hope
The current window marks a departure from past errors. Tielemans, at 28, is in his prime, while Santos, 21, has his best years ahead. Baleba, 22, would add youthful energy and defensive solidity.
Tielemans and Santos
Tielemans brings Premier League experience from Aston Villa, while Santos impressed at Chelsea with his technical ability. Both are expected to slot directly into Carrick's system, providing creativity and control.
Baleba on the Horizon
Brighton's Carlos Baleba, valued at £70m, would complete a formidable trio. His box-to-box style and pressing intensity could finally give United the midfield engine they've lacked for years.
