President Javier Milei's Latin America tour to meet far-right leaders marks a significant shift in Argentine foreign policy. The self-styled libertarian is prioritizing ideological alliances over traditional multilateral engagements, as he embarks on a trip that includes Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.
Milei's Diplomatic Strategy in Latin America
Analysts note that Milei's itinerary aligns with a wave of far-right victories across the region. By attending the launch of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential campaign in Brazil and the inaugurations of Keiko Fujimori in Peru and Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, Milei is positioning himself as a regional leader of the conservative movement.

Key Figures on Milei's Tour
| Country | Leader Met | Event |
|---|---|---|
| Brazil | Flávio Bolsonaro | Presidential campaign launch |
| Peru | Keiko Fujimori | Inauguration |
| Colombia | Abelardo de la Espriella | Inauguration |
| Ecuador | Daniel Noboa | Bilateral meeting |
While Milei justifies the trips as efforts to triple trade, experts remain skeptical. “I’ve never seen Milei take much interest in official visits,” said Juan Gabriel Tokatlian, a sociologist at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. “What interests him are figures from the world of big tech and the far right.”
Comparison with Trump’s Influence
Benjamin Gedan of the Stimson Center noted that Milei remains “deferential to the US president, Donald Trump,” and avoids upstaging him. Unlike Trump, who has a vast network of allies, Milei is still building his influence in a region where far-right leaders are increasingly prominent.
