Nature Reserve Manager Coexists with Giant Wasp Nest in Office 2026

A nature reserve manager discovered a giant wasp nest in her office and chose to coexist rather than remove it, offering a remarkable example of wildlife coexistence. Eilish Rothney, reserve manager for the Trinity Broads in Norfolk, found the nest inside her converted shipping container office and decided to adapt her workspace instead of evicting the insects. Her story highlights how understanding and patience can transform a potential crisis into a peaceful partnership with nature.

The Discovery: A Wasp Nest in the Office

When wasps began streaming through a rusted gap in her office door one June morning, Rothney's first instinct was the same most people would have: get rid of them. But after a moment of reflection, she questioned why she had to remove the colony. The nest quickly grew to more than a metre tall, covering an entire bookshelf of ring binders and papering the interior with chewed wood pulp cells.

Rather than panic, Rothney opened the window to give the wasps a clear flight path and began sharing her space. She describes walking past the nest calmly, like a browsing cow, and notes that the wasps became accustomed to her presence. Over time, she felt more relaxed alongside them, and the colony thrived.

Understanding Wasp Behavior and Colony Dynamics

The queen lays eggs continuously, while worker wasps forage and bring food back to feed the larvae. The larvae exude a sugary liquid that adult workers drink, creating a complex social system. Rothney describes a low purring sound rising from the nest, caused by thousands of wings beating to keep the colony cool. She compares the colony to a living organism, emphasizing its intricate, coordinated nature.

Rothney isn't worried about being stung, noting it wouldn't be worse than mosquito bites. Her advice for others: keep calm, as insects can sense when they aren't threatened. She traces her convictions to an ecology field trip in university, where she found poetry and beauty in understanding wildlife.

Practical Tips for Coexisting with Wasps

• Stay calm and move slowly around wasps; they are less likely to sting if they don't feel threatened.
• Provide an alternative exit, like an open window, to avoid trapping wasps indoors.
• Learn about wasp behavior to appreciate their role in pollination and pest control.
• If a nest is in a high-traffic area, consider relocation by a professional rather than extermination.

Comparison: Traditional Removal vs. Coexistence

Key Takeaways from Rothney's Experience

• Wasp nests can be safely shared if approached with respect and understanding.
• Adapting your environment (e.g., opening a window) can prevent conflict.
• Observing wildlife up close offers unique educational and emotional benefits.

FAQ
