North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the Ukraine war. This deployment, up from an estimated 30,000 in July, underscores the deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow. Zelenskyy has called on South Korea to provide air defence support, highlighting Ukraine's urgent need for advanced interceptors.

North Korea's Military Support to Russia: A Growing Threat

The confirmed increase in North Korean troop deployments to Russia signals a new phase in the conflict. Kyiv has reported finding North Korean missiles on Ukrainian territory, and a North Korean missile unit is now deploying to western Russia, potentially equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers. This follows North Korea's earlier deployment of 14,000 soldiers to Russia's Kursk region in 2024, where thousands have been wounded or killed.

Weapons and Munitions Supplied by North Korea

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, sometimes of dangerously low quality, according to Russian milbloggers and troops. Additionally, Pyongyang has provided ballistic missiles, long-range artillery, and multiple-launch rocket systems, according to Ukrainian and independent assessments. This material support has been crucial for Russia's sustained offensive operations.

Ukraine's Appeal for South Korean Support

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine "would very much like to receive support from South Korea in an area where we have a shortage," specifically air defence systems. Ukraine is ready to work on a drone deal and other areas, with diplomats in contact with Seoul. The shortage of high-end air defences is critical, as Russia increasingly uses ballistic missiles that are difficult to intercept without systems like the US Patriot.

Potential Weapons Package from Turkey

Seventy ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles are part of a weapons package Ukraine is poised to buy from Turkey, according to US congressional documents. The US would need to approve the resale, which could provide Ukraine with additional strike capabilities. This comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster its defences against Russian aggression.
