Taliban Rule Fuels Surge in Violence Against Afghan Women 2026

The Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan has unleashed a new era of violence against women, with cases like Liza Shams's brutal death highlighting a systemic crisis. Under Taliban rule, women are being killed with impunity, as the regime's policies strip them of protection and legal recourse.

The Killing of Liza Shams: A Case Study in Taliban-Era Femicide

Liza Shams, a 33-year-old Afghan woman, died on February 1 after being beaten by her husband, Hasibullah Sarwari. Her father, Shamsuddin Shams, received a video call from his daughter showing her injuries—a broken jaw and severe facial trauma. Despite being rushed to Rahmat Hospital in Kabul, she died within an hour. The forensic report documented multiple fractures to her cheekbones and sinus walls, consistent with enormous blunt-force trauma. Yet the official cause of death was listed as rat-poison ingestion, a claim her in-laws used to argue suicide.

This case is not isolated. Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, violence against women has escalated dramatically. The regime's systematic erasure of women from public life—banning them from education, work, and even parks—has created an environment where domestic abuse and femicide thrive unchecked.

The Role of Taliban Policies in Enabling Violence

The Taliban's legal and social framework actively disempowers women. Their so-called 'morality laws' restrict women's mobility and autonomy, making it nearly impossible for victims to seek help. Police and courts often dismiss abuse cases, and women who report violence risk being accused of 'moral crimes' themselves.

International organizations like UN Women have documented a sharp rise in gender-based violence since the Taliban takeover. A 2023 report noted that 90% of Afghan women report experiencing at least one form of intimate partner violence, and many deaths are mislabeled as suicides to avoid accountability.

Comparing Violence Before and After Taliban Rule

To understand the severity, consider the data from a recent study on femicide in Afghanistan:

The table shows a doubling of femicide rates, a collapse in legal recourse, and the complete closure of shelters. The Taliban's dismantling of protective services has left women with nowhere to turn.

Why the World Must Act

The international community has largely failed Afghan women. Sanctions and diplomatic isolation have not changed Taliban behavior. Meanwhile, funding for women's rights organizations has plummeted. Without urgent intervention, more women will die like Liza Shams.

Key takeaways from this crisis:

• Taliban policies directly enable femicide by removing legal protections and normalizing violence.
• Mislabeling deaths as suicide masks the true scale of murder.
• International pressure must include concrete mechanisms to protect women, such as safe houses and legal aid.
• Survivor testimonies are crucial for documenting abuses and advocating for change.

FAQ: Understanding Violence Against Women Under Taliban Rule

What are the main causes of violence against women in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan?

The main causes include the Taliban's institutionalized misogyny, which dehumanizes women; the absence of a functioning justice system; and cultural norms that treat women as property. The regime's edicts, such as banning women from work and education, increase their dependency on male relatives, making them more vulnerable to abuse.

How does the Taliban's legal system handle cases of domestic violence?

The Taliban's legal system is based on their interpretation of Sharia law, which often dismisses domestic violence as a private family matter. Women rarely report abuse because they fear retaliation, and when they do, police often side with the husband. There are no shelters or protective orders available.

What can the international community do to help Afghan women?

The international community can fund underground women's shelters, support remote legal aid services, and document human rights abuses to hold perpetrators accountable. They can also pressure the Taliban through economic incentives tied to women's rights, and provide safe passage for at-risk women and their families.

Are there any success stories of Afghan women resisting Taliban violence?

Yes, despite immense risks, some Afghan women have formed underground networks to support each other, provide shelter, and document abuses. For example, the 'Women's Resistance Movement' has been active in hiding women at risk and smuggling them out of the country. These efforts, though small, show resilience and the need for international support.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

Liza Shams's death is a stark reminder of the Taliban's war on women. Her story is one of thousands, each marked by brutality and impunity. The world cannot look away. We must pressure the Taliban to restore women's rights and provide immediate protection for those in danger.

As we reflect on this crisis, remember that every statistic represents a life cut short. The time to act is now—before more women are killed in the shadows of Taliban rule.
