Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30 2026

Thailand school shooting: a 14-year-old suspect killed at least seven people and injured more than 30, officials say, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the country's recent history. The incident unfolded at Debsirin Secondary School in Bangkok, where the suspect, a pupil, opened fire after allegedly killing his grandparents at home. This tragic event has reignited debates over gun ownership and school safety in Thailand.

Details of the Attack

According to Thai police, the teenage suspect used a handgun belonging to his grandfather to kill his grandparents before traveling to the school. At the school, he shot five teachers and several students, leading to chaos and fear among the school community. The suspect eventually shot himself, and authorities have confirmed his arrest.

The death toll includes two grandparents, five teachers, and others, with at least 30 people injured. Among the injured, a 12-year-old girl remains in a coma with a bullet wound to the head, while two others have undergone surgery and are in stable condition. The health minister visited Phra Nang Klao Hospital to oversee care for the critically wounded.

Response and Aftermath

The Debsirin Secondary School announced that all classes would be suspended from 10 to 14 August, with staff working from home. Thailand's prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, vowed to propose new legislation to restrict public firearm carrying, citing the country's high rate of private gun ownership. The Higher Education minister donated blood and urged the public to do the same.

Police have been collecting evidence from the suspect's home, including computer equipment, to understand the motive. The prime minister noted the suspect was "under stress" and appeared to have planned the assault.

Gun Ownership and Mass Shootings in Thailand

Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in the world, yet mass shootings are relatively rare. However, recent years have seen several high-profile incidents, including a 2020 shooting at a mall in Nakhon Ratchasima and a 2022 daycare center attack. These events highlight the urgent need for stricter gun control measures.

These incidents underscore the devastating impact of easy access to firearms. The proposed law aims to limit public carrying, but experts argue that comprehensive background checks and mental health support are equally critical.

Key Takeaways

• The suspect used his grandfather's handgun, highlighting the risk of unsecured firearms.

Conclusion

The Thailand school shooting has shocked the nation and the world, prompting urgent calls for action. While the government moves to tighten gun regulations, the immediate focus is on supporting victims and their families.
