Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30 2026

The Thailand school shooting has left at least seven dead and more than thirty injured, according to officials, as a 14-year-old suspect opened fire at Debsirin School in Bangkok. This tragic event highlights the urgent need for stricter firearm regulations and mental health support for youth.

Details of the Thailand School Shooting Attack

Thai police confirmed that the teen suspect first killed his grandparents at home using his grandfather's handgun, then proceeded to his school, Debsirin, where he was a pupil. The attack occurred during school hours, causing panic and chaos among students and staff.

Officials reported that five teachers were shot at the school before the suspect turned the gun on himself. At least 30 people were injured, with nine in critical condition, including a 12-year-old girl with a bullet wound to the head who remains in a coma.

Response and Casualties in the Thailand School Shooting

Thailand's health minister visited Phra Nang Klao hospital, where three critically injured patients were admitted. Two underwent surgery and are stable, while the young girl's condition remains grave. The Higher Education minister donated blood and urged the public to do the same.

The school announced that all classes would be suspended from 10 to 14 August, with staff working from home. The prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, said the suspect was under stress and had planned the assault, vowing to propose new laws to restrict public firearm carrying.

Gun Ownership and Mass Shootings in Thailand

Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in the world, yet mass shootings are relatively rare. This incident adds to a list of recent tragedies, including the 2020 Nakhon Ratchasima shooting that killed 29 people.

Experts argue that easy access to firearms, combined with lack of mental health intervention, creates a dangerous mix. The prime minister's proposed law aims to tighten controls, but critics question enforcement and cultural attitudes toward guns.
