President Trump's new tariffs on more than 80 countries have ignited a fierce political backlash, with Democrats accusing the administration of an end-run around the Supreme Court and Congress. The tariffs, announced by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, are justified by claims that these nations failed to enforce a ban on forced labor imports. This controversial move reignites debates over trade policy and executive power.
The Tariff Announcement and Global Reaction
On Thursday, Jamieson Greer declared that the Trump administration is imposing tariffs on over 80 countries for their alleged failure to prohibit forced labor goods. Brazil, hit with a 12.5% tariff, rejected the accusation as "completely arbitrary and unjustified." Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum avoided direct mention of the tariffs, instead focusing on bilateral talks under the USMCA agreement.

Political Firestorm in Washington
Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (D-CA) led the charge, calling the tariffs a sham. "President Trump isn’t serious about combating forced labor. He’s trying to make an end-run around the Supreme Court and Congress to reimpose his illegal tariffs," she wrote. Democrats argue this oversteps executive authority and undermines legislative oversight.

Broader Implications for Trade and Diplomacy
Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized Trump’s unpredictability: "It’s very hard to deal with President Trump when he changes his mind every single day." Meanwhile, the Pentagon’s omission of four soldiers killed in the Iran war from its official list added another layer of controversy. The tariff announcement may further strain relations with key allies and disrupt the USMCA framework.
