The US attacks oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated tensions with Iran, as a fifth day of strikes targets Iranian military capabilities. This latest confrontation, involving a disabled oil tanker near Kharg Island, threatens global energy supplies and maritime security.
US Strikes Oil Tanker and Iranian Military Sites
On Thursday morning, the US military fired Hellfire missiles into an unladen oil tanker’s smokestack after it ignored warnings while attempting to reach Kharg Island. This action is part of a broader US blockade on Iranian ports, aiming to restrict Tehran’s oil exports. The US Central Command confirmed the strikes targeted Iranian coastal defenses and missile sites, including locations on Greater Tunb Island.

Simultaneously, state media reported strikes on Iran’s capital, Tehran, with air defenses active over the city. Iranian officials claim the recent US strikes have killed over 35 people and wounded more than 300 others. The attacks come after a ceasefire between the two sides collapsed, raising fears of a full-scale war.
Impact on the Strait of Hormuz and Global Commerce
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway for global oil and gas supplies, carrying about a fifth of the world’s energy resources. Iran’s threat to close the strait on Saturday has intensified the conflict, with the US reimposing its naval blockade. This disruption poses significant risks to international trade and energy markets.
