The inaugural Fat Marmot Week 2026 has crowned its champion, a six-year-old yellow-bellied marmot named Dawn, who tipped the scales at a whopping 6kg (13.2lb). Dawn secured back-to-back victories in both the mass-gain and popular-vote competitions, according to organizers. More than 23,000 votes were cast during the week-long tournament, held from August 24 to August 29, featuring eight yellow-bellied marmots as they prepared for hibernation.

Julien Martin, professor of evolutionary ecology at the University of Ottawa and co-leader of the marmot project, expressed amazement at Dawn's size. "That's one of the heaviest animals we've ever measured," Martin said. "Six kilos is really humongous for that species."
