Electric Car Charging Fines: Avoid Costly Parking Penalties 2026

Electric car charging can lead to unexpected parking fines, as many EV drivers discover when they receive a penalty notice for using charging points. This issue arises because charging an electric vehicle is often classified as parking by landowners, even when drivers are simply refueling. Understanding the rules around EV charging stations is crucial to avoid costly parking charges and ensure a smooth experience.

Why EV Drivers Get Parking Fines While Charging

Many electric car owners assume that plugging in at a public charger is straightforward, but parking fines can occur when charging points are located in car parks with specific restrictions. For instance, using a charger outside store opening hours may violate terms, as seen in the case of Kevin Laban, who received a £70 penalty at an Aldi car park. The key issue is that EV charging is deemed parking by landowners, and signs may not clearly indicate this.

Common Scenarios Leading to Fines

Drivers often encounter fines when chargers are in supermarket car parks with limited hours, or when apps fail to display restrictions. Landowners and charger operators like Pod may not sync parking rules, leaving drivers unaware. To avoid this, always check car park terms and conditions before plugging in.

How to Avoid Electric Car Charging Penalties

To protect yourself from unfair fines, follow these steps. First, read all signs in the car park, even if the charger app says it's accessible. Second, use apps that integrate parking restrictions, but don't rely solely on them. Third, contact the landowner if you're unsure about terms. Many fines are issued by automated cameras, so being proactive is essential.

Key Takeaways for EV Drivers

• Always check car park opening hours and parking rules before charging.
• Look for physical signage near the charging point that states restrictions.
• Use charger apps that display parking charges, but verify with landowner policies.
• If fined, appeal immediately with evidence of unclear signage or app errors.
• Consider charging at dedicated EV stations without parking time limits.

What to Do If You Receive a Parking Charge Notice

If you get a fine, don't panic. You can appeal by showing that the charger app misled you or that signs were absent. In the Laban case, Aldi canceled the PCN after a complaint, highlighting that landowners may waive fines if terms aren't clear. Keep screenshots of the app and photos of the car park to support your case.
