How to Clean Produce to Avoid Cyclospora Parasite 2026

With the recent cyclospora outbreak causing explosive diarrhea and affecting thousands across the US, learning how to properly clean produce is more critical than ever. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the parasite can survive on fresh fruits and vegetables, making thorough washing essential, especially during peak salad season.

Why Cyclospora Requires Extra Vigilance

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes watery, explosive diarrhea and can lead to severe dehydration. Unlike bacteria, it is resistant to standard rinsing, so proper cleaning techniques are vital. The CDC recommends cooking vegetables to kill the parasite, but if you eat raw produce, extra steps like scrubbing and drying can help reduce risk.

Key Tools for Safer Produce

After testing hundreds of kitchen gadgets, I recommend these six tools to elevate produce cleanliness and help prevent cyclosporiasis:

• Salad spinner – Uses centrifugal force to remove excess water and trapped debris from leafy greens.
• Vegetable brush – Scrub firm-skinned produce like cucumbers and potatoes to dislodge parasites.
• Produce wash – A vinegar or baking soda soak can help break down residues.
• Peeler – Remove outer layers of fruits and vegetables when possible.
• Colander – Rinse under running water for at least 30 seconds per item.
• Clean dish towel – Pat dry to remove lingering moisture where parasites thrive.

Comparison: Rinsing vs. Scrubbing vs. Cooking

Pre-washed bagged veggies may still harbor the parasite, so rewashing them is a smart precaution. Always wash hands and surfaces before handling food.
