The Italian Grand Prix qualifying 2026 is underway at Monza, and the excitement is palpable. With dramatic practice sessions, driver penalties, and strategic team plays, the grid is set to be shaken up. Here’s your live blog for all the action as it unfolds.
Key Storylines Before Qualifying
Several intriguing narratives are shaping up ahead of the session. George Russell topped both practice sessions, but his success was aided by teammate Kimi Antonelli’s tow. Antonelli, who faces a grid penalty for an engine change, has nothing to lose and will likely assist Russell again in qualifying.

Max Verstappen is also in a favorable position, with Liam Lawson taking engine penalties in the Red Bull, effectively moving Verstappen up the grid. Meanwhile, Alex Albon will support Williams teammate Carlos Sainz, adding another layer of team strategy.
Hamilton vs. Verstappen: A Renewed Rivalry
FP3 saw a flashback to 2021 as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen clashed on track. Verstappen felt aggrieved by Hamilton’s earlier blocking, and the two nearly collided at the first chicane—the same spot of their infamous 2021 accident. Hamilton was forced onto the escape road, but no damage was done.
This rivalry adds spice to qualifying, with both drivers pushing to the limit. Will they cross paths again in Q3?
Grid Penalties and Their Impact
Several drivers face grid penalties that will reshuffle the starting order. Here’s a quick breakdown:
| Driver | Penalty | Expected Starting Position |
|---|---|---|
| Kimi Antonelli | Engine change | Back of grid |
| Liam Lawson | Engine penalties | Back of grid |
| Isack Hadjar | Engine penalties (via Lawson) | Beneficiary |
These penalties mean that drivers like Russell and Verstappen have a clear run, but they still need to deliver a perfect lap to secure pole.
Qualifying Session Timeline
The session is divided into three segments: Q1, Q2, and Q3. Each segment eliminates the slowest drivers, with the final shootout deciding the top 10 grid positions.
Q1: The First Cut
All 20 drivers hit the track to set a baseline. Expect traffic and strategic tow usage as teams try to position their drivers for a clear lap.
Q2: Middle Segment
The top 15 advance, and teams fine-tune their setups. Medium tires are often used here, but some may gamble on softs for a quick lap.
Q3: Pole Position Battle
The top 10 fight for pole. With fresh soft tires, drivers push to the limit, and any mistake can be costly.
Who to Watch

- Lewis Hamilton – Seeking redemption after the FP3 clash.
