Mercedes has finally solved the engine problem that hampered George Russell in recent races, including the Belgian Grand Prix where he was eliminated. The issue, tied to the hybrid battery’s energy deployment, cost Russell valuable points and damaged his world championship hopes. Here’s a full update on the fix and what it means for his 2025 campaign.
What Went Wrong with Russell’s Mercedes Engine?
Starting at the Austrian Grand Prix, Russell experienced erratic electrical energy deployment from his Mercedes power unit. The problem persisted at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps, both high-energy circuits that exposed the flaw. At Spa, Russell lost electrical power exiting Turn 1, making him an easy target for the Ferraris and forcing a collision with teammate Lewis Hamilton that ended his race.

Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s Mercedes teammate, went on to win that race and extended his lead in the drivers’ standings to 50 points. Russell was furious, calling out his team over the radio.
Mercedes Identifies the Root Cause
After weeks of investigation, Mercedes engineers traced the problem deep within the calibration of the engine’s electronic control code. “These new power units are just exceptionally complex,” Russell said ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. “There was something deeply embedded in the calibration… almost impossible to see unless you knew exactly what to look for.”
Ahead of the Hungarian GP, Russell confirmed the fix: “I’m feeling good and glad there are some positive answers that have come back from the battery. It’s eyes forward now.” The resolution restores confidence that Mercedes can compete at circuits requiring high energy deployment.
Impact on the Championship Battle
With Antonelli holding a 50-point lead, Russell needs a strong comeback. The corrected energy system should allow him to extract full performance from the car. The table below compares Russell’s results before and after the fix (estimated performance):
| Race | Energy Deployment Issue? | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Austrian GP | Yes | P6 (suffered power loss) |
| British GP (Silverstone) | Yes | P4 (struggled late in race) |
| Belgian GP (Spa) | Yes | DNF (collision after power drop) |
| Hungarian GP (expected) | No (fix applied) | TBD |
Key Takeaways from the Mercedes Engine Fix
- Root cause: Deep calibration error in the hybrid battery’s energy management code.
- Timing: Fixed before the Hungarian Grand Prix, ending a three-race struggle.
- Russell’s reaction: Stood by his blunt radio comments, saying they pushed the team to solve the issue.
- Championship impact: Clean energy deployment could cut Antonelli’s lead if Mercedes returns to top form.
- Next steps: Mercedes now focuses on maximizing performance at remaining energy-sensitive tracks.
FAQ
What was the Mercedes engine problem?
The problem was an erratic electrical energy deployment from the hybrid battery’s control system, which caused unpredictable power loss during races, especially on high-energy circuits like Spa and Silverstone.
Has Mercedes fixed George Russell’s engine issue?
Yes, Mercedes confirmed ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix that they identified and corrected a calibration error in the engine’s code. Russell says the car now feels normal.
How does the engine fix affect Russell’s title chances?
With a 50-point deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli, the fix restores Russell’s ability to race competitively. Consistent strong finishes could close the gap over the remaining races of the season.
