The Berlin Pride attack shocked the world when a suspect drove a van into a crowd near the city's Pride festival and then went on a knife rampage. German police confirmed on Sunday evening that the chief suspect, 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, was shot dead during an operation in the Spandau district. One woman was killed and 29 others were injured in the attack, which occurred near the Brandenburg Gate at around 10pm local time on Saturday. The suspect, a German national with Lebanese roots, was reportedly a supporter of Islamic State and had a prior criminal record.
Details of the Rampage
The attack took place in Tiergarten park, close to one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the rented minivan plowed into pedestrians, followed by the suspect attacking people with what appeared to be a machete.
