Fiddler on the Roof Review: A Superlative Cast Revives a Classic 2026

The Fiddler on the Roof review highlights a vibrant revival that brings new life to a beloved musical classic. This production, now playing at the Theatre Royal, features a superlative cast and a stunning design that captures both the beauty and the heartbreak of Anatevka.

A Timeless Story Reimagined

Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof has been a staple of musical theatre for over six decades. This revival honors the original while infusing it with fresh energy and emotional depth. The wheat field that stretches into the sky, with crimson poppies tucked among the stalks, serves as a poignant reminder of hope and memory.

The story follows Tevye, a dairyman in the fictional village of Anatevka, as he navigates the changing world around him. His daughters' modern choices challenge his devotion to tradition, and the looming threat of displacement adds urgency to their personal struggles.

Superlative Cast Delivers Powerful Performances

Troy Sussman shines as Tevye, bringing both humor and vulnerability to the role. His conversations with God and the audience break the fourth wall in a way that feels intimate and engaging. Alexis Fishman as Golde provides a strong counterpoint, and the five daughters—played by Freya Boltman, Ellen Ebbs, and Caity Plummer—each bring their own unique voice to the story.

The chemistry among the cast is palpable, making the family's joys and sorrows feel deeply real. Sigrid Thornton as the matchmaker adds a touch of wit and warmth, rounding out a truly ensemble-driven production.

Design and Direction Elevate the Experience

The set design is a standout feature, with the wheat field serving as both a visual metaphor and a functional stage element. The direction keeps the pacing brisk while allowing moments of reflection to land. The choreography, especially in numbers like "Tradition" and "Sunrise, Sunset," is both energetic and precise.

Musical Highlights

The score, by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, remains as memorable as ever. Songs like "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "To Life" are performed with verve and emotional resonance. The orchestra, under the direction of a skilled conductor, brings out the richness of the music without overpowering the vocals.
