Lewis Hamilton has confirmed there are still no rules of engagement at Ferrari despite his Monza clash with teammate Charles Leclerc. The seven-time champion revealed the pair had cleared the air but no formal guidelines were agreed.
Hamilton and Leclerc Clear the Air After Monza Incident
The Monza clash occurred on the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix when Leclerc forced Hamilton wide at turn two. Hamilton called the move unacceptable and later compared Ferrari's lack of driver protocols to his former team Mercedes. "When I was at Mercedes we had written rules of engagement. Here there are no rules," he said. Ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit in Madrid, Leclerc admitted fault, and Hamilton confirmed they had spoken frankly to clear the air.

No Formal Rules of Engagement at Ferrari
Despite positive talks with team principal Fred Vasseur, Hamilton was unequivocal when asked if any agreement on rules of engagement had been reached. "There was not," he said. "I'm sure at some stage we'll discuss how we can be better, but we've not had a lot of time to just turn around. You can't change things in two days." The seven-time champion emphasised that he has always tried to race cleanly but stopped short of demanding immediate changes.
Why Rules of Engagement Matter in F1
Rules of engagement are essential in Formula 1 to prevent intra-team collisions that can cost valuable constructors' points. At Mercedes, Hamilton benefited from clear protocols that defined how teammates should race each other. Without such guidelines, on-track battles can become unpredictable and risky.
| Team | Rules of Engagement | Notable Incidents |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes (Hamilton era) | Written and strictly enforced | Few internal clashes |
| Ferrari (current) | None confirmed | Monza 2024 (Hamilton vs Leclerc) |
