Johnny Depp is making a highly anticipated Hollywood comeback as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new Paramount film. The actor surprised fans at Comic-Con in costume, signaling his return to the big screen after a turbulent few years.
Johnny Depp's Controversial Return to Hollywood
Since the high-profile legal battles with Amber Heard, Depp's career has been on hold. His 2020 film Minimata earned less than $1 million, and the 2023 Jeanne du Barry premiered amid feminist protests. Now, Depp is staging a major comeback by playing the iconic miser in a new take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

The Comic-Con Surprise
Depp appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in full Scrooge garb, shuffling and shouting insults at the crowd. He made Trump jokes and interrupted a directors' panel, creating buzz that has reignited public interest. The performance was raw, unscripted, and unmistakably Depp.
Trailer Analysis: A PR Masterstroke?
The film's trailer explicitly frames Depp's return with captions reminding audiences of his beloved characters: Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter. The tagline "The master of misfits returns" and Depp whispering "It's good to be back" leave no doubt that this is a calculated comeback. Yet many critics question whether the industry should embrace an actor found by a UK court to have committed domestic violence.
Comparison: Past Iconic Roles vs. Scrooge

| Edward Scissorhands | Edward Scissorhands | Gentle, misunderstood, creative |
