Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has recounted harrowing torture in jail and shared her hopes for the future in an exclusive interview. The 54-year-old human rights activist described being beaten so severely by Iranian security agents that she required two brain scans, before being held in solitary confinement for two months despite her grave injuries.

Arrest and Brutal Assault

During her arrest in December, Mohammadi said security agents “inflicted extremely severe blows to my head and body.” She recounted, “They grabbed and forcibly pulled me by my hair, kicking and punching me repeatedly with such force that massive, painful bruises covered my entire body.”

In the days that followed, Mohammadi suffered dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Despite her severe injuries, authorities refused to allow a forensic examination. “Despite the severe physical injuries and trauma I sustained, I was immediately transferred to a solitary confinement cell,” she said. “During the first few days in solitary confinement I was completely dazed and confused, had severe dizziness, was nauseous and was vomiting. They sent me from the detention centre twice for a brain CT scan in a hospital. Despite this, they were not willing to allow the forensic medical examiner to come and prepare a report on my injuries.”

Deteriorating Health and Temporary Release

Mohammadi was temporarily released from prison for medical treatment in May after being found unconscious in her cell following a cardiac arrest. She fears that another return to prison is always looming, given her fragile health and the Iranian authorities' relentless pursuit.

Her case has drawn international condemnation, highlighting the Iranian government's systematic use of torture against dissidents. Mohammadi's resilience in the face of such brutality has made her a symbol of resistance and hope for many Iranians.

International Response and Advocacy

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have called for Mohammadi's unconditional release and an end to the harassment of activists. The Nobel Committee awarded her the Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all.
