Racing Santander's emotional La Liga return was defined by a stunning strike from 19-year-old Sergio Martínez, who scored a spectacular goal in his first top-flight appearance. The moment sent 22,413 fans into euphoria at El Sardinero, marking a memorable comeback for the club after 14 years away.
The Goal That Shook El Sardinero
It was a goal straight out of a comic book. The ball sat up invitingly, and Sergio smashed it on the bounce, a cartoon arrow drawn to the top corner. The shot tore through the air at 126 km/h, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. As the ball hit the net, the stadium erupted. Sergio ran to the corner, clutching the badge he has worn since he was 10, tears streaming down his face.

A Dream Debut for Sergio Martínez
Sergio, a 19-year-old from just along the coast, had been at the club half his life. His first game for Racing saw him climb into the stand to hug his grandad; his first in primera was even more emotional. He could barely stand, his legs giving way as the reality of his achievement sank in. Captain Álvaro Mantilla said, "The poor kid couldn't believe what had happened; none of us could have if we'd just done what he had just done."
Racing Santander's Long Road Back
This was not just Sergio's first top-flight game; it was also Mantilla's and Jorge Salinas's, another 19-year-old from Santander. The club had been absent from La Liga for 14 years, and the return was a deeply personal affair. Sergio Canales, an academy product who left 16 years ago, finally came home at 35. The emotional weight of the occasion was felt by everyone in the stadium.
