Ricky Gervais Alley Cats Review: Boorish Comedy Fails to Land 2026

Ricky Gervais returns with Alley Cats, a new animated comedy on Netflix, but this boorish, sweary series fails to land a single laugh. In this review, we explore why the show disappoints and what it means for Gervais's legacy.

What Is Alley Cats About?

Alley Cats follows a gang of stray cats who spend most of their time lounging on a sofa in a derelict house, watching TV and bantering. Gus, voiced by Gervais, is a fat ginger tom who bellows ignorant opinions at his feline friends. The premise aims for edgy humor but instead delivers a series of predictable, mean-spirited jokes.

The Comedy Problem: Transgressive vs. Good

Gervais has built a career on transgressive comedy, but Alley Cats leans heavily on shock value without the wit that made his earlier work successful. As one queer friend put it, "He's defunct. We don't need him any more." The show's jokes about dwarves, disabled people, and trans people feel dated and lazy, not daring.

Good transgressive comedy walks a fine line, offering a safety valve for societal tensions. Alley Cats misses that balance, substituting cruelty for insight. The result is a series that feels both offensive and boring—a fatal combination.

Comparison: Gervais's Best vs. Alley Cats

Key Takeaways from the Review

• Alley Cats fails to deliver humor, with zero laughs in our screening.
• The show's reliance on offensive stereotypes feels outdated and lacks cleverness.
• Gervais's shift in comedy may alienate even former fans who appreciated his earlier nuance.
• Despite the controversy, the series is unlikely to spark meaningful conversation.

Why Gervais's Comedy Has Changed

Some blame "woke culture" for the backlash, but the real issue is that Gervais's material hasn't evolved. The Overton window on certain jokes has shifted, but comedians like Hannah Gadsby and Jerrod Carmichael prove you can be provocative and thoughtful. Alley Cats chooses the easy path of punching down, which is neither brave nor funny.

Is There Any Audience for This?

Diehard fans might appreciate the familiar Gervais persona, but even they may tire of the repetitive rants. The animation is serviceable but uninspired, and the voice acting lacks energy. For most viewers, Alley Cats will be a skip.

FAQ

In conclusion, Alley Cats is a misfire that may signal the end of Gervais's relevance in comedy. If you're looking for smart, edgy humor, look elsewhere. Save your time and skip this one.
