A shocking case of a Scottish police officer rapist has emerged after PC Alan Greer’s attacks on at least nine women over 14 years came to light. The officer, who took his own life in May 2024, was found to have raped a woman in her home in Glasgow in 2012 after she called police for help. Her disclosure late last year triggered one of Police Scotland’s largest anti-corruption inquiries, uncovering eight additional victims, five of whom were sex workers.
The Investigation: Police Scotland’s Anti-Corruption Response
Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff confirmed that the inquiry found “truly shocking” evidence. She stated: “This officer has clearly abused his power.” The case has been compared to the Met Police’s Wayne Couzens scandal, where a serving officer raped and murdered Sarah Everard. Police Scotland insists there were no missed opportunities to catch Greer earlier, but the source close to the investigation said it feels like “Police Scotland’s Wayne Couzens moment.”

Victim Profile and Attack Timeline
Greer, born in Australia in 1978, joined Strathclyde Police in 2009 and served for 17 years without any disciplinary red flags. He was married with a child. His victims ranged from a woman who reported a separate crime to sex workers he encountered off duty. A BBC Disclosure investigation revealed he used hundreds of sex workers throughout his career, and more victims may still come forward.

- Anti-corruption units need better tools to spot patterns in officer behavior.
- Sex workers are often targeted and must be included in safety protocols.
