Sir Garfield Sobers, the greatest all-rounder in cricket history, has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy unmatched in the sport. The West Indies legend passed away at his home in Barbados, just 11 days before his 90th birthday, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies on Friday. His death marks the end of an era for cricket fans worldwide.
Early Life and Rise to Stardom
Born into a humble background in Barbados, Sobers first showcased his talent in club cricket before joining the Barbados police force at age 15. He made his first-class debut a year later against India at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown. By age 17, he debuted for the West Indies Test team in 1954 against England at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

His maiden Test century came in 1958 against Pakistan at the same ground, where he scored an unbeaten 365—a world record for the highest individual Test score. That record stood for 36 years until Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994, with Sobers present to congratulate him.
Record-Breaking Career Highlights
Sobers is best remembered for being the first batter to hit six sixes in a single over, achieved while playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in Swansea in 1968. This feat remains one of cricket's most iconic moments. Over his 93 Test matches for West Indies from 1954 to 1974, he served as captain in 39 of them.
Renowned broadcaster and former Australia captain Richie Benaud once described Sobers as “the greatest all-round cricketer the world has seen.” Benaud praised his brilliance as a batsman, splendid fielding, and extraordinary bowling skills, whether with the new ball, left-arm spin, or over-the-wrist spin.
