The World Cup has long been a stage for subtle political expression, but recent tournaments show it is now fully engulfed by politics. From identity maths among diaspora viewers to players becoming avatars of political frustrations, the beautiful game reflects global tensions more than ever.
The Evolution of World Cup Politics
For decades, the World Cup allowed fans to micro-dose politics through national pride and underdog stories. Roger Milla’s corner-flag dance in 1990 symbolized African triumph, while Roberto Baggio’s goal in 1994 dashed Nigeria’s hopes. These moments were political, yet subtle.

Today, the tournament is a lightning rod for debates on colonialism, race, and human rights. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar sparked controversies over labor conditions and LGBTQ+ rights, proving football cannot escape the political sphere.
Identity Maths: How Diaspora Fans Choose Teams
Black diaspora viewers often use a complex “identity maths” to pick their allegiances. They support African teams first, then Black diaspora teams, adopted homelands, and finally teams based on vibe or politics. Spain, for instance, is seen as less problematic than France, despite France fielding a majority-Black team.
This process reflects diasporic orphanhood and the weight placed on players of African descent, who become unwitting political symbols. Their performances are scrutinized not just for skill but for what they represent.
