If you've experienced a British Gas meter mix-up like the one reported in Shropshire, you're not alone. In new-build developments, incorrect meter registration can lead to billing chaos and unfair penalties. This article explains your rights and the steps to fix your energy account.
Understanding the British Gas Meter Mix-Up Problem
When energy meters are installed in new housing estates, each property is assigned a plot number that should match its address. However, mistakes happen: meters can be registered to the wrong plot, causing residents to be billed for each other's energy. As British Gas admitted, “energy meters for new-build properties can sometimes be registered incorrectly following construction when a plot number is assigned to the wrong address.”

How Meter Registration Errors Affect You
- You may receive bills for a neighbor’s consumption while your own usage goes unaccounted.
- If you cancel your direct debit to avoid paying someone else's bill, you could face a higher tariff (e.g., a 19% increase).
- Your bank details may be sent to the wrong party, leading to a data breach.
Steps to Resolve a British Gas Meter Mix-Up
First, gather evidence: take photos of your meter’s serial number and compare it with the one listed on your bill. Contact British Gas and insist they cross-check the national database. If they close your complaint, escalate to the Energy Ombudsman. In the Shropshire case, British Gas eventually corrected the meter assignments after persistent follow-up.
| Aspect | Before Correction | After Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Billing accuracy | You pay estimated charges based on wrong meter | Charges reflect your actual usage |
| Tariff | Higher if direct debit cancelled | Standard direct debit discount restored |
| Compensation | May be offered for data breach | Full compensation for overcharges and inconvenience |
Key Takeaways
- Always verify your meter number matches your bill.
- Do not cancel your direct debit without guidance – it can increase your tariff.
- British Gas must correct meter errors and may offer compensation.
- If unresolved, file a complaint with the Energy Ombudsman.
