The ban on high-caffeine energy drinks for under-16s in England marks a major shift in public health policy, aiming to reduce childhood consumption of these potentially harmful beverages. Starting April next year, retailers will be prohibited from selling drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre to anyone under 16, with fines of up to £2,500 for violations.
Why the Ban on Energy Drinks for Under-16s?
The government reports that about 100,000 children in England consume high-caffeine energy drinks daily, with higher rates in deprived areas. These drinks, often promoted by online influencers, are linked to anxiety, sleep disruption, concentration problems, and negative educational outcomes. Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson stated, “High-caffeine energy drinks have no place in children’s hands.”
