Tour de France 2026: Pogacar Crushes Alpe d'Huez to Extend Lead 2026

Tour de France 2026 delivered another unforgettable day as Tadej Pogacar devoured Alpe d'Huez to win stage 19 and stretch his overall lead. The Slovenian champion attacked early on the legendary climb, leaving rivals gasping and cementing his dominance in this year's race.

Stage 19 Breakdown: Alpe d'Huez Decides the Race

Stage 19 of the Tour de France 2026 was always destined to be a pivotal moment. With 21 hairpin bends and gradients reaching 11%, Alpe d'Huez has a history of breaking contenders. Pogacar, already in yellow, showed no mercy. He launched his move with 6km to go, dropping Remco Evenepoel and Isaac Del Toro with brutal efficiency.

The victory margin was 6 seconds over Lenny Martinez, but the psychological damage was far greater. Pogacar now leads Evenepoel by over seven minutes, making the final two stages largely ceremonial.

Key Performances and Standings

The stage reshuffled the general classification. Richard Carapaz took the polka-dot jersey as king of the mountains, while Mads Pedersen remains untouchable in the green points jersey. The numbers tell a clear story of UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s dominance.

Pogacar’s solo effort was a masterclass in pacing and power. He now has 185 points in the green jersey competition and leads the general classification by 7 minutes 11 seconds over Evenepoel.

What This Means for the Final Days

With only Stage 20 (a hilly stage to Val Thorens) and the Champs-Élysées procession remaining, Pogacar’s third Tour title is all but assured. The Tour de France 2026 has been a showcase of his versatility and tactical intelligence.

• Pogacar leads GC by 7m11s – effectively unassailable.
• Carapaz leads the mountains classification with 91 points.
• Pedersen leads points classification with 502 points.
• UAE Team Emirates-XRG holds two riders in top three overall.

Comparison with Previous Alpe d'Huez Battles

Stage 19 will be remembered alongside iconic ascents like 1986 (Hinault vs. Lemond) and 2011 (Contador vs. Schleck). Pogacar’s time of 38 minutes from the foot to the summit was the fastest since the 2009 edition.
