Tour de France Director Rejects Bias Accusations Over Night Tests 2026

The Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme has forcefully rejected accusations of bias toward French riders, defending the night-time drug tests conducted by the International Testing Agency (ITA). Speaking at the start of stage 18 in Voiron, Prudhomme insisted the ITA operates independently and does not favor any rider. “We fought to have an independent agency, and now we have one,” he told the Guardian. “I have no desire whatsoever to interfere with their work. Not only am I not informed, I must not be informed.”

Bias Claims Emerge After Night-Time Testing Controversy

The accusations stem from comments by Slovenian rider Matej Mohoric of Bahrain Victorious, who implied that French teenager Paul Seixas—a general classification contender—received preferential treatment. Mohoric stated, “It would be good to guarantee equal treatment for everyone. After all, we know that this French rider [Seixas], who is well placed in the general classification, didn’t undergo that [night-time] test.” The ITA quickly stressed its independence from French anti-doping authorities, and Prudhomme reinforced the importance of that autonomy.

How Night-Time Testing Unfolded

Both race leader Tadej Pogacar and rival Jonas Vingegaard were tested at unusual hours last Sunday: Pogacar at 5am and Vingegaard at 2am. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) described these as “exceptional measures, reserved for limited and justified circumstances.” Prudhomme noted that the ITA is fulfilling a long-sought role in cycling. “In 2008 the Tour was actually organised without the UCI, under the authority of the French Cycling Federation, precisely so that independent anti-doping controls could be carried out.”

Key Takeaways on the Doping Test Dispute

• Independent testing agency ensures no national bias, according to Prudhomme
• Night-time tests are reserved for justified circumstances, per UCI
• Mohoric’s comments highlight lingering trust issues among riders
• French federation previously oversaw anti-doping during the 2008 Tour
• Prudhomme emphasizes he learns of tests only after the public

The debate comes amid heightened scrutiny of anti-doping procedures in professional cycling. Prudhomme’s staunch defense of the ITA aims to restore confidence in the fairness of the sport. However, Mohoric’s skepticism reflects a broader concern: that even with independent agencies, perception of bias can undermine credibility.

Implications for the Tour de France

As the 2025 Tour de France continues toward Paris, the integrity of testing methods remains a hot topic. Riders and fans alike watch for consistent application of rules. Prudhomme’s position reinforces the separation between race organizers and anti-doping authorities, but the controversy suggests that transparency alone may not be enough to silence doubts.
