Tour de France Femmes Ventoux Stage Reroute Amid Wildfire Risk 2026

The Tour de France Femmes is under pressure to reroute its Mont Ventoux stage due to wildfire risk, a critical decision that affects the race's most iconic climb. Organizers are working closely with local authorities to ensure safety while preserving the competitive spirit of the event.

Wildfire Threat Forces Route Adjustments

The Vaucluse prefecture has formally requested that race organizers consider an alternative route for the stage passing through the Ventoux foothills, citing peak fire danger in forest areas. A fire risk assessment is scheduled for August 4, and an alternative route will be implemented if the risk is deemed extreme.

This follows a challenging men's Tour de France, where three stages were disrupted by wildfires and extreme heat, requiring emergency services to be deployed. Marion Rousse, race director of the women's Tour, emphasized adaptability: "We are in constant touch with the prefecture and we will adapt, just as the men's Tour did."

Balancing Safety and Race Integrity

Organizers are exploring multiple options that maintain the Ventoux climb while avoiding the highest-risk zones. Rousse confirmed, "There will still be a climb of the Ventoux, but we have several options." The priority is to protect riders, staff, and local communities while delivering a challenging stage.

The inclusion of Mont Ventoux highlights the rapid growth of women's cycling. "There is no mountain that is too difficult for women," Rousse stated, noting the increasing speed and consistency of the peloton.

Impact on the 2024 Race Route

The nine-stage race, starting in Lausanne, features an individual time trial and stages through the Jura, Massif Central, and Provence. The Ventoux stage is the standout, drawing global attention. A reroute could alter the GC battle significantly, but organizers are committed to fairness.

Historical data shows that Mont Ventoux has been a decisive climb in men's racing, with legendary performances. For women's racing, this stage represents a milestone in the sport's evolution.
