Wildfires Force 250,000 to Evacuate in France and Spain 2026

Unrestrained wildfires in France and Spain have forced more than 250,000 people to flee, marking one of the largest peacetime evacuations in Europe. Authorities from both countries continue to battle the blazes fuelled by persistent heatwaves and the climate crisis.

Mass Evacuations Across France and Spain

In central Spain, about 70,000 residents were evacuated, while France saw 197,000 people flee—including tens of thousands from the wine region city of Bordeaux. Spain declared a national emergency for the first time due to a wildfire, and France’s interior minister called the evacuations “probably” the biggest peacetime evacuation the country has ever seen.

Comparison of Evacuations and Firefighting Efforts

The French government deployed huge military cargo planes and rushed 1.5 million face masks to protect people from smoke inhalation. Fire crews dug trenches and used retardants as winds pushed fires closer to Bordeaux.

Impact of Heatwaves and Climate Crisis

Persistent heatwaves and high winds exacerbated the fires, causing two of three Spanish blazes to merge on Friday. French officials said the sudden fires caught residents and authorities off guard. In the Gironde region, the fire grew to “an unprecedented magnitude,” driven by strong winds toward the Bordeaux metro area.

Key Takeaways

Ongoing Firefighting and Safety Measures

Hundreds of firefighters worked tirelessly but were unable to stop the advance. The French government ordered evacuations in Bordeaux’s western suburbs, with scenes of panic unfolding as residents fled under smoke-darkened skies. Officials emphasized that the situation remains “long and very difficult.”
