Clean Start Game Review: A Thought-Provoking Tidying Sim 2026

Clean Start is a thought-provoking tidying sim that tells an immigrant's tale, offering a fresh take on the cozy house-sorting genre. Developed by Polish studio Serious Sim, this game places you in the role of Lena, a domestic cleaner who has moved to an unspecified western country with limited language skills and a family to support back home. As you scrub, polish, and tidy various homes, you uncover the quiet narratives of both the spaces you clean and the life you're building.

What Makes Clean Start Unique in the Tidying Sim Genre?

Unlike popular titles like Unpacking or A Little to the Left, Clean Start focuses on the experience of an immigrant worker rather than a homeowner. The game's director, Katarzyna Haptaś, drew inspiration from her mother's stories of working abroad as a domestic cleaner in the 1990s. This personal connection infuses the game with authenticity and emotional depth, making it more than just a simple sorting puzzle.

Gameplay: Cleaning with a Purpose

In Clean Start, you'll tackle a variety of cleaning tasks—from wiping down kitchen counters to vacuuming carpets. The gameplay is meditative and satisfying, but it also carries symbolic weight. Each cleaned surface represents a step toward stability in a foreign land. You can also rearrange furniture and decor, adding a creative layer that lets you personalize each space. And yes, you can pet the dog, a small but welcome comfort.

Why the Immigrant Narrative Matters

The game's story is a universal one, resonating with anyone who has felt like an outsider. Haptaś's research included interviews with immigration center workers in Poland, providing insights into the challenges faced by migrants, particularly those from war-torn Ukraine. This real-world grounding makes Clean Start a powerful commentary on labor, dignity, and resilience.
