Clean Start Review: A Thought-Provoking Tidying Sim About 2026

Clean Start is a thought-provoking tidying sim that tells an immigrant's tale, and it's quickly becoming one of the most talked-about indie games of the year. Developed by Polish studio Serious Sim, this cozy house-sorting game puts you in the shoes of Lena, an immigrant who cleans homes in an unspecified western country. With a focus on quiet storytelling and meaningful interactions, Clean Start elevates the genre beyond simple organization.

Unlike other tidying sims like Unpacking or A Little to the Left, Clean Start centers on the emotional weight of domestic work. You'll polish tables, scrub floors, and rearrange rooms, but every action feels tied to Lena's journey. The game's director, Katarzyna Haptaś, drew from her family's experiences, making this a deeply personal project that resonates universally.

What Makes Clean Start Different?

Clean Start stands out because it doesn't just ask you to tidy—it asks you to understand. As Lena, you enter homes that tell stories of their owners, but also reflect your own struggles. The game subtly explores themes of displacement, language barriers, and the invisible labor that immigrants often perform.

Gameplay Mechanics and Emotional Depth

The core loop involves cleaning and organizing, but the real hook is the narrative. You can rearrange items to give rooms a personal touch, and yes, you can pet the dog. These small freedoms create a sense of agency that makes the story feel more impactful.

Serious Sim conducted interviews with immigration workers and drew from real stories, including those of Ukrainian refugees in Poland. This research lends authenticity to every scene, making Clean Start a rare example of a game that tackles social issues with grace.

As the table shows, Clean Start uniquely combines the tidying mechanic with a powerful social narrative. It's not just about making spaces neat; it's about understanding the person doing the cleaning.

Key Takeaways from Clean Start

• Immigrant perspective: The game humanizes the immigrant experience through interactive storytelling.
• Personal inspiration: Director Katarzyna Haptaś based the story on her mother's and grandmother's experiences.
• Authentic research: The team consulted immigration experts and incorporated real-world insights.
• Cozy yet profound: It balances relaxing gameplay with deep emotional themes.
• Universal appeal: Even if you're not an immigrant, the story of resilience and hope resonates.

Why Clean Start Matters

In a gaming landscape full of escapism, Clean Start offers something more grounded. It reminds us that behind every tidy home is a person with a story, and that domestic work is often undervalued. The game's title itself suggests a new beginning—not just for Lena, but for players who may see their own family histories reflected.

Haptaś's mother worked abroad as a cleaner in the 90s, and her grandmother went to America with only a few dollars. These stories are woven into the fabric of the game, making it a heartfelt tribute to immigrant workers everywhere. The result is a game that is both personal and universal, a rare feat in any medium.

Final Thoughts on Clean Start

Clean Start is more than a tidying sim; it's a narrative experience that stays with you long after you put down the controller. Whether you're a fan of cozy games or looking for something with more substance, this title delivers. It's a must-play for anyone interested in stories about immigration, family, and the quiet dignity of labor.
