Virtue and a Sledgehammer Game Review: Smash Your Past 2026

Virtue and a Sledgehammer is a bold indie game that puts a literal hammer to your past, blending queer identity with surreal robot-smashing action. Developed by Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour, this narrative-driven title challenges players to confront memory, community, and self-discovery through its protagonist Pratelle.

Gameplay: Smash Through Walls and Memories

In Virtue and a Sledgehammer, you control Pratelle, who carries her mother's corpse and a giant sledgehammer in the boot of her car. Your mission is simple: take the hammer to your home town. As you enter shops and homes through the door and leave through the opposite wall, you'll encounter robots that either attack or flee—all digital versions of your old neighbours.

The gameplay loop is satisfying and cathartic, with each swing of the hammer shattering not just walls but also glass statues that contain fragments of memory. These memories are crucial to uncovering Pratelle's story, which revolves around her sister's mysterious decision to turn everyone into robots.

Queer Representation and Community Response

Pratelle, with her close-cropped hair and dungarees, reads as a queer woman, but interestingly, testers often mistook her for a man. The team didn't anticipate this confusion but found it fits the character perfectly, especially in this setting based on a small Spanish town like those in which the developers grew up. Game director Jordi de Paco explains, "These towns are culturally living a couple of decades behind, especially regarding subjects such as queerness. Maybe these communities aren't ready to acknowledge that they have other identities within them – and Pratelle is exactly that."

Many robot villagers react to Pratelle with vitriol, but some flee or beg for their lives, which feels harrowing despite their identical bodies. The villagers remember what it was like to have a body, a plot point the full game will explore in detail.

Story Themes: Family, Rebellion, and Physical Media

The most important part is Pratelle's story, which you uncover by hitting glass statues around town. It seems as if Pratelle's own sister turned everyone into robots, which is one of the reasons she rebels with what she calls "20 pounds of physical media." But Virtue isn't meant to be read as a critique of our increasingly digitised lives. Instead, De Paco created a family story of a "sometimes embarrassing teenager" to contrast with the otherwise futuristic themes.

This contrast is what makes the game resonate. It's not about technology being bad; it's about how we carry our pasts, our families, and our identities into the future.
